Changing hosts - bye bye Digiweb

Post by digidog » Wed Dec 19, 2012 7:53 am

For the past nine years we've enjoyed a great relationship with our hosting company - Nucleus. Thanks Warren! However the company was sold back in May to Digiweb - an existing hosting company - and things started to change.

A good friend of this site called Mapman complained to Digiweb that he was being defamed on our forums. He wasn't of course, as anyone who followed his increasingly bizarre behaviour would testify. We eventually banned this person from our forums for his abusive attitude and for repeatedly spamming our admin address - most people would agree that 20 identical emails in the space of a couple of minutes is somewhat excessive.

Without bothering to even look at the thread in which Mapman hangs himself, Digiweb unilaterally decided that because this site is called "ScamBusters" it follows that anything posted on the site must be defamatory. That is clearly a ridiculous position. I advised them that if a statement is defamatory, it doesn't matter whether it's posted on this site or one called jesuslovesfluffybunnies.com - it's still defamation. Likewise, a discussion regarding dropshipping on TradeMe is not defamatory in any way.

On 21st November Digiweb disabled our site and forums. I spoke with one of their execs and the site was back online within 15 minutes, but the admins of this site agreed to end our involvement with Nucleus - any hosting company which reacts by panicking and considers themselves to be above the law does not deserve our business. Consequently we moved the site to another, more stable host. There has been the odd outage while we moved these forums... sorry about that but it was a technical challenge and a big thanks to Scott for his knowledge and assistance. We couldn't have done it without you.

We're now happily back in business - enjoy the forums and merry xmas to you all.

Given DigiWeb's frightened rabbit attitude towards spurious and unjustified complaints, I'm most surprised to find them acting as New Zealand's sole reseller for Kim Dotcom's new Mega business. They've set up a seperate domain to handle cloud storage for Mega and the pro option undercuts Digiweb's own prices by a huge amount. http://www.digiwebmega.co.nz/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don't get me wrong... I like Big Kim and wish him every success with his new venture. Online cloud storage is not new and the big boys like Google and Microsoft offer similar products. Personally I fail to see how the US media companies and their friends in the FBI can live in fear of our imfamous German immigrant's plans. However, acting as an agent for Mega is bound to expose a hosting company to the high probability of legal action and I wonder how Digiweb will cope with their first takedown notice from the FBI? Then this morning I came across a strange little Aussie site called "Stop File Lockers" which is apparently placing some sort of digital curse on Digiweb. http://stopfilelockers.com/digiweb-acce ... edit-card/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A quick read through that site suggests that few people would take either StopFileLockers or it's creator Robert King seriously, apart from the Herald of course - this story seems to assign King more credibility than his site suggests. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news ... d=10860680" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think King is a Luddite trying to hold back history.

Mr Dotcom has had a huge takeup of his service on the first day, showing two things:

1. There is a demand for the service
2. More importantly, there are hundreds of thousands of folk willing to support him. That doesn't bode well for the politics of the destruction of the original business. Watch the suing going on once the case falls over.

Took me some time to get signed up (yes, I'm happy to support), and I couldn't do so at all with Firefox running under Linux. Had to swap to Chromium browser.

As for Digiweb, given their actions in relation to this site, I feel Mega may have problems in the future. However, Mr Dotcom is nobodies fool and he no doubt has contingency plans in place.
Google, the answer to so many questions!

Downtime
Over the last 24 hours we've been moving the forums to a new, faster server... still with the same hosting company. Hopefully performance will be snappier... and sorry for any inconvenience during the down time.

Digiweb.co.nz appears to be the "parent" company of a company that deceived me out of my domain name http://www.powerweeder.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .
http://www.domaincentral.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is the company in question. I had over 10 years of great service from bottledomains.com.au, it all went wrong at the end of last year when my http://www.powerweeder.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; came up for renewal. I began receiving emails from domaincentral as well as bottledomains. It was to say the least confusing. I did a B-pay in to my bottle account approximately one month before expiry. This should have been the end of the story, unfortunately it wasn't.

I received emails from an individual representing domaincentral named Stephen Bluck, claiming I had not paid. I checked with my bank (Westpac) and they confirmed payment had gone in to the account. He continued to claim I hadn't made the payment, during this time I was still receiving emails from both companies. Eventually Bluck demanded money put in to a different account that I had never used before. By now the alarm bells are ringing, they already have my money and now want more money ! I requested that I could transfer my domain name to another company, which they refused because they said I hadn't paid (catch22 situation) I rang the bank and confirmed yet again that they had received payment, I explained my predicament the lady at the bank and she said if I was really worried they could attempt a reverse transaction and get my money back. In the meantime I took out a backorder for my own domain name. http://www.powerweeder" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; with crazydomains so when it became available I would get it back. As this went ahead I was so upset I informed Bluck and his cohorts that they could close my account and I wanted nothing else to do with them. Ok I was wrong I shouldn't have let them deceive me so easily, but by continually denying I had paid them they successfully denied me the right to make payment and or transfer powerweeder. The backorder with crazydomains failed because powerweeder.com was transferred straight to http://www.buydomains.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; whom are now selling it for $2888.......collusion/corruption ? :-({|=
