reminded me of file stored on my computer. Can't remember why I saved it, but now it makes interesting reading.
This is sell-through rate for May 2009, one year ago. Interesting to compare with current data (for April 2010).
For your convenience I highlighted categories which sell better than year ago - very few, as you may see.

wow i see Candle making 21% (22%) is up 1%
one thing i look at most days is race cars and boats,i think about 80% of Competition cars have been relisted over and over again for 18 months plus,my brother has had his car for sale for 2 years on tm and the same with a lot of the boats,just keep being relisted...

Years pass by, and sell-through rates continue to drop.
To save forum space, here is the link to table for 2009, 2010 and 2013 sell through rates on TM:

Most dramatic drop, as you may see, is for Books category - sales are close to zero these days.
Firstly, new electronic readers technology affects people habits.
Secondly (and most importantly) TradeMe allowed huge retailers to flood books category and made it impossible for buyers to enjoy browsing.
Similar situation in Clothing - big retailers joined TM and sell through rates dropped significantly.

While most categories experience drop in sales, the less affected are Antiques & collectables and Crafts.
Guess why?

you also have to take into account TM`s recent push to have sellers list $1 Reserve auctions to inflate the sell through rate.

A while ago i was puzzled how the sell rate of Computer Monitors could be a high as 25%.
its not until you browse the categories with higher sell rates that you find hundreds of ancient junk items at $1 reserve which of course will sell.

Once you removed those auctions that would not have sold than more than a few dollars that sell rate figures would drop even more.

its also not clear if much of the drop is more to do with sellers just clogging up the categories with even more junk.

I don't think it's the factor. Current number of listings is 2 289 786 - just about 600K more than in 2009, not much for auction site of this size.

It's more to do with structure of these listings, IMO - less unique secondhand and collectable items, and more new imported junk.
With secondhand stuff people enjoy browsing, with new imports they more likely just search and buy when needed. Entertainment part of online auction is long gone, unfortunately, and not only on TradeMe. Since retailers took over, most auction sites experience decline in sell through rates.

That`s an interesting point regarding TM allowing a few categories to be exempt from having a high volume listing fees.
You have to wonder what they think the point is of allowing some large sellers to list as many auctions as they possibly can

i found a book trader just the other day with 32,000 current listings

They have had 605,482 listings in the last 2 months yet the amount of FB`s collected show around 2,200 sales every 2 months.
That equates to around 1 sale for every 280 auctions listed.

The fee increases would have killed many sales of more expensive items as sellers are having trouble selling an item that would normally go for $100 and having to list at $107.50 to cover the success fee.
TM admit that the average sale amount is now $50. That seems shockingly low and must have been much higher in the earlier days.

While their advertising take is increasing, it sounds like only the endless price increases are propping up TM's profits in the auction area.
Trade Me has reported a 4 per cent rise in net profit to $78.6 million on a 15 per rise in revenues to $164.1m, despite "underwhelming" activity on its "general items" auction site.

The company will pay a final dividend of 8.3 cents, bringing its total annual dividend to 15.8c.

Trade Me announced at the same time that it would buy LifeDirect, a company that lets people compare insurance company offers online.

Chairman David Kirk said it was a "solid and satisfying" result.

"We've delivered another record profit and a strong dividend," he said, adding Trade Me's prospects remained good.

Chief executive Jon Macdonald said the result was in line with the guidance it issued in February.

He highlighted annual growth of 29 per cent in Trade Me's revenue from classified advertising, but said the performance of its "core marketplace" had been underwhelming.

"Although 'general items' revenue is up 5 per cent on a year ago, activity levels have been softer than we'd have liked," he said.

Forty per cent of visits to Trade Me's site were now through mobile devices, the company said.

Has anyone spotted that the sell-through rate list is no longer showing all the categories?
Surely TM is not deliberately hiding the categories that have had their sell rate plummet this year. ;-)

It sounds like TM's plans to allow thousands of Chinese sellers to peddle their wares on TradeMe may not have been fruitful.
Morningstar analyst Nachi Moghe says TradeMe is still a growth stock even though future growth will probably be slower than previously.

Morningstar analyst Nachi Moghe said he believed the market had over-reacted to TradeMe's slowing growth profile; shares in the company peaked at $5.45 last May but fell as low as $3.95 in January. They ended trading on Friday at $4.

Mr Moghe said he believed $4.40 was fair value for TradeMe shares.

He said the slowdown mostly responsible was in the auction business, which accounted for about 40 percent of the revenue.

"That business has slowed down as it has reached a level of maturity but the auction has got two components - one is the new goods business and one is the old goods business.

"The old goods business is a significant chunk of that, and that has reached a maturity and will grow in line with nominal GDP growth," Mr Moghe said.

The company was trying to boost the new goods business but goods being sold through the website were not high-value, so they were trying to get more branded, new goods on to it.

However, it faced competition from international websites such as Amazon and Ebay, which sold similar types of products, he said.

"That is the reason why we are a little skeptical and apprehensive at the moment."

After all, with so many kiwis buying direct out of China these days, why would the sellers want TM to clip the ticket to the tune of 8% or so?
