Bananas4free

There's another new entrant in the NZ online auction market. It's another "no fees" site, based out of Timaru. There
are few listings on the site at the moment, but it appears to be competently designed and I wish them luck.

I tried to sign up, unsuccessfully. I think it's because I surf with cookies disabled, but their site says nothing apart from the captcha is wrong. I will read their T&C to see if there is any mention, and may have another go later.

This week's trick is spamming your members. The first email I received from B4Free made a big deal about the fact that you can now add a user profile on their site... er, wow? Today's missive isn't a lot better.
Hello again,

We would like to let you all know that later this week Bananas4Free will have a new exposure in the media.

If you want to start selling NOW, please re-list any expired listings (and add any new ones!).

This free online trading site is all about Kiwis helping Kiwis.

In the last 24 hours new registrations have skyrocketed!

Kind regards,

The Team at Bananas4Free
Consider those statements for a moment - can you spot a connection between them?
1. B4F have a promotion coming up later this week.
2. New registrations skyrocketed yesterday.

Look... all businesses bend the truth a little and I can appreciate that as a new business, they're keen to keep the B4Free profile in people's minds. But I don't like being spammed, especially when it's just for the sake of it. I've searched their "My Account" area and FAQ but I can't find any way to turn off B4F promotional emails. So I've emailed them to ask.

*bump* I think the banana has gone rotten - it appears the site has been offline for about a month, and they are not responding to queries on their Facebook page.

Two months on and it looks like you're right. The site has disappeared and their Facebook page hasn't been updated since January. I'd say the banana has ended up in life's big compost heap.

And by the way, they never bothered to reply to the email I sent them (see above) back in 2013.
