Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
This idiot has just contacted me for this scam, using the same name and email address...
I'm going to have some fun with them...
Email below from: Lynne Burley <thehippis20@gmail.com>
Thanks for responding,my name is Lynne Burley and like i did say,am interested in buying this from you now off TradeMe (as am i not an everyday TradeMe user) for my partner,as we just moved overseas from Auckland.
I will want to know if there is anything else to add to the description apart from what you have on the advert and also could you please give me your final price as i am looking for a decent bargain.
I will arrange pick up from you after i have paid and all necessary documentations will be handled as well before pick up.

Now the Phun begins...
Lets see if I get a response
They are also sending me txt messages from +64 279532689, this is a Telecom Pre-Paid mobile, I have filed a complant with Telecom, they are in the process of shutting down this number...
Here's my response to the scammer:
opps, I made an error with the PayPal email address:
It should be: paymyarse@gmail.com not payseman@gmail.com
Please make the correction and re-do the payment.
Cheers Duck.

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
It sounds like you're enjoying your scambaiting Duck... and good on you for contacting Telecom about the scam number. When you're nearing the end game I'd suggest that you employ Peter's trick (cabalnz1) and request a copy of their driver licence to conclude the deal. That should throw a spanner in the works.

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
As described previously I was aware of the scam but sadly, which people may fall for, they are saying things like this now" Hi there, Thanks for getting back,
A friend in my camp has this type of car and I am genuinely obsessed with his car, I have always wanted to take his car for a ride, which is why I decided to buy one for myself, I would have loved to come for an inspection of the vehicle but I am working away from the country at this time as I am a member of the NZ Defence Force which is presently in Afghanistan as part of the PRT.
I am willing to buy the car at your requested price and arrange the pick-up of the vehicle with a Private Courier Service, I do not have internet banking over here, but my Bank account is linked with my paypal account so I am able to send payment to your PayPal account directly and I will pay the paypal fees too, I had used them a couple times on eBay and they seem quite secure, in order for me to secure the payment of the vehicle, I would require the details below from you;
Your PayPal EMail Address :
Full Name :
Does the car require any work at all ?"
So are posing as our armed forces..selling a car on trade me seems to becoming a problem..a friend of mine got 4 of these type of emails..what are trade me doing about this? Maybe they need to put a warning out when you list a car..some people would not be aware and would fall for it.

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
Well done in spotting the scam! The one thing we've been asking TradeMe to do for years is to ban IP addresses from dodgy countries like Nigeria and Romania. Sadly even though they don't allow people outside NZ or AU to trade on their site, they continue to allow scammers from "bad" localities to view their listings and consequently make contact with kiwi sellers.
Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
This is not entirely correct - there are sellers from the UK on TradeMe already, with TM blessing.digidog wrote:Sadly even though they don't allow people outside NZ or AU to trade on their site

Problem with cars and overseas scammers is that TM do not want to limit access to classifieds because of potential real estate buyers.
We all know well that TM only use "blanket" approach to everything.
Do you remember how they banned all good overseas buyers and sellers because they didn't manage to ban Romanian and Nigerian invasion?
Now, if TM would ban access from abroad to car classifieds, they will also ban access to real estate part of the site.

The popularity and frequency of these car scams seems to increasing, so we've added an informational page to our main web site.

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
A new one tonight - sent a TXT from 00 64 27 9681067 and then the usual email from Craig & Megan Wright - cm4wright@gmail.com - asking all the usual questions including payment Via Paypal - I will string them as long as I can - wanted to pay $15000 for a $5000 listed car - great!!
Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
I've been approached by the same Megan & Craig, directly by txt, for a car I'm selling. They then sent the same email address (cm4wright@gmail.com). They're asking for a registered email address and I guess the next question would be my bank a/c no. I'm just keeping them hanging on until I can pass them over to 'authorities' of some sort. Can anyone suggest what the most effective route is, and whether the 'authorities' are much use?cabalnz1 wrote:A new one tonight - sent a TXT from 00 64 27 9681067 and then the usual email from Craig & Megan Wright - cm4wright@gmail.com - asking all the usual questions including payment Via Paypal - I will string them as long as I can - wanted to pay $15000 for a $5000 listed car - great!!

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
Unfortunately because this is a cross border crime the "authorities" are as useless as mammary glands on a male bovine beast.
You cam report a scam here but that won't do anything meaningful.
If you string them along just remember these people are career criminals. If they send you email attachments they *could* contain nasties to infect your computer. Just be careful, and enjoy.

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam
And yet another new one tonight from ma.tommy007@gmail.com Marcus Tommy (I dont think he is some relation of James Bond) -
"Thanks for your response, I am really interested in the
immediate purchase,
1. what's your best price you want for it ?
2. Are there any other issues with the item not mentioned ?
I will be glad if you can tell other interested buyers that the item has been sold. I will be paying via PayPal. I can only pay through pay pal at the moment as i do not have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my pay pal account, and this is why i insisted on using PayPal to pay. If this is acceptable, advice soon and if you don't have an account, you can easily create an account fast and easy at their site. I will need you to provide the following information to facilitate the Payment 1.Your PayPal Email Address. 2.Your address for pick up. I will be responsible for moving, I will have my mover who handle my shipping from anywhere in the world come over for the pickup after i have made the payment. Thank you for your time"
Another time waster just when I thought they were ignoring me - Ha Ha
