Dangerous good being sold on TM

Post by digidog » Sun Jun 19, 2011 3:38 am

Stuff is running a story about TradeMe sellers peddling potentially dangerous goods on the
site. Energy Safety audited sellers of things like cellphone chargers and plug adapters.
The government agency found 90% of professional traders on the popular auction website
failed to establish the safety of the products they were selling. A further 70% could not
produce any evidence that their products were safe.

Energy Safety subsequently cracked down on 23 users by dishing out fines totaling $33,000.
A further 15 traders were warned.
That's fines averaging over $1,400 per person. But proving just how stupid some people can be...
Within a fortnight of issuing fines and warnings to 38 TradeMe members selling chargers and
power supplies, Energy Safety found five were already back selling the same products.

And TM appear to have a new person heading Trust & Safety.
Trade Me trust and safety head Jon Duffy said users found selling unsafe or untested goods would
be warned or banned from the site.

"We don't want Trade Me to be seen as the place to sell dodgy electrical goods."

It's like the Defense against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts ... nobody seems to last more than a year.
Perhaps this role is cursed as well!

Adapter (100-240V AC) NZ adapter needed.
TM are quick at removing auctions with illegal Plug adapters but don`t seem to take any action with plugs that don`t have the required pin insulation.

The mobile phone catagory always seems to be the worst area for offending due to the ammount of imports.

A quick browse shows most of the offenders are high volume sellers who, as the stuff article reported, keep relisting the items even after being warned.
Many of them simply remove any wording that refers to any illegal items included

An Auckland-based online trader who repeatedly sold unsafe plug adaptors has been convicted and fined $10,500
for selling unsafe electrical goods.

Digital Tronics continued to sell the plug adaptors and external power supplies for Bluetooth headsets despite
repeated warnings from Energy Safety, the government agency tasked with promoting the safe
supply and use of electricity and gas.

Compliance officer Richard Lamb said there were real risks of fire and electrocution from dangerous plug adaptors.

''They provide little protection from live parts, which is concerning, given that plugs are used at skirting board level
and easily accessible by infants and young children,'' he said.

The prosecution follows an earlier case of a Trade Me member who was fined $2,800 for selling unsafe electrical parts.
The member was banned for two weeks from trading on the site and is now back trading on a final warning about
facing a permanent ban if he sells unsafe electrical goods.

And the digital tronics TM account has been "closed". But for how long?
